Greetings fellow Lopes!

I am so excited to officially welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! ASGCU has been working hard all summer to welcome you back and share in the best experience possible. Both I and my Vice President, Matthew Shinn, felt it necessary to run on a campaign last year that was inviting to students. We truly wanted to capture the heart and mind here at GCU. We get to be a part of such a unique and loving culture here at GCU. That is where Matt and I wanted to focus our energy, which is why we chose to run on “Be Grounded.” It was through this slogan and idea that we are planning to touch on three areas during our term: Grounded Students, Grounded Community and Grounded Identity.

We are working to achieve this in several different ways. Over the summer, we were able to change processes internally to better be able to interact and serve all of the students here at GCU. We are now able to receive the valuable information we need to hear from students more accurately. We are also excited to announce that we have created a new initiative called the “Golden Initiative.” This Initiative is based on serving the community around us. Western Phoenix is a place that we get to call not only school but also home. We have a wonderful opportunity to be able to serve and impact our community through this project. We also added a fun new tradition into your monthly routine by adding a new event called 30 Minute Rush. This event will occur on a monthly basis immediately after chapel. It is a way to get to know your student government, grab some snacks, play some games, and relax on a Monday right before classes. We are going to also continue our dedication to many of the events and initiatives that have occurred in the past and continue to impact this campus. Some of which include It’s On Us and Embrace Week. Other regularly scheduled events like Diversity Speaks and Midnight breakfast have been updated, and we cannot wait to share in these experiences with all of you.

We in ASGCU could not be more excited for this year to get going. It is going to be a great school year, and we are so happy to be a part of the ever growing GCU campus. The atmosphere, campus, and culture that we have here truly is a space that is unmatched in this nation. As student leaders in the student government, we are excited to welcome you back. And as fellow students, we could not be happier to be able to share a space and our lives with all of you.
